A key announcement has been made by the Dy. Chief Minister of Telangana as part of his budget speech. Deputy CM Bhatti Vikramarka made key announcement related to crop insurance to the farmers in the state.
He said, Effective from this year, Telangana government would join Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana PMFBY scheme, a centrally sponsored scheme which provides crop insurance to the enrolled farmers in the state. Dy. CM Also made announcement that his government would pay the premium amount making it completely free crop insurance scheme.
Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) is a voluntary Scheme for the farmers in the country. The premium under the scheme is determined through biding however, farmers have to pay maximum 2% for Kharif, 1.5% for Rabi food and oilseed crops and 5% for commercial or horticultural crops and the balance of actuarial or bidded premium is shared by the Central and State Government on 50:50 basis and 90:10 in case of North Eastern States. Few states bare the complete share of farmers premium making it free crop insurance scheme.
Under the scheme PMFBY Comprehensive risk insurance is provided to cover yield losses occurring due to non-preventable risks, such as Natural Fire and Lightning , Storms, Hailstorm, Cyclone, Typhoon, Tempest, Hurricane, Tornado etc. It also covers crop loss due to various other calamities like pest attacks & weather vagaries such excess or deficit rainfall, excess or deficit temperature, humidity, frost, wind speed etc.
