The union government has announced good news for students living in private hostels, Railway passengers by exempting GST under few goods and services. The Union Finance minister made this announcement as part of the 53rd GST council meeting 2024-25 held on Saturday.
Below are the details
✓ Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced exemption of GST on various goods and services under railways and private hostels along with few exemptions under the renewable energy sector.
Private Hostels
✓ Fees and other services under private hostels shall be exempted from GST.
✓ However, it is mentioned that this rule applies only to the hostels whose fee is less than Rs.20 thousand per month. This will give big relief to those who come to the cities for education and employment.
✓ She also said that hostels of educational institutions were already exempted from GST.
Railways
✓ Platform tickets, Waiting rooms and cloakroom charges have been exempted from GST.
✓ Additionally , Battery car charges on platforms are also exempted from the GST.
Other Exemptions
GST slab on Solar cookers brought down to 12%. Fire, Poultry machines, Cartons , Sprinklers etc have been merged under a single GST slab.
Few exemptions and IGST extensions have been provided for import items in the defence sector. The finance minister has also stated they made several provisions to benefit Micro Vendors in the country.
GST Council has recommended to prescribe a uniform rate of 12% on all Milk Cans meaning steel, iron, aluminum which are irrespective of the use. They are called milk cans but wherever they are used that will be the rate applicable so that no disputes arise out of it.
