State Symbols of Telangana

The state of Telangana, a southern state in India was formed on 2nd January 2014. Post the formation of Telangana, the state had so far adopted seven symbols as the “State symbols of Telangana” which are as follows:

State Emblem :

The state emblem of Telangana is a circular emblem which includes a depiction of the its historical culture and rich heritage. It has Kakatiya Kala Thoranam in center and Charminar embedded within the thoranam.

It also includes sarnath lion capital symbol and satyamev jayate.  It has “Government of Telangana” in English, “Telangana Sarkar” in Urdu and “Telangana Prabhutvamu” written in Telugu. The emblem was designed by painter, Laxman Aelay. It was adopted on 2 June 2014 after the newly formed government.

State Animal : Jinka (deer)

The state animal of Telangana is Jinka or Deer. It is deeply associated with Indian history and a reference to this graceful animal was there in the great epic Ramayana. It can survive in the smallest forests also. State adopted the same citing It reflects the mindset of the people of Telangana as it is very sensitive and innocent.(as per the offcial portal of telangana)

State Bird : Palapitta (Indian Roller or Blue Jay).

The state bird of Telangana, India is the Indian Roller (palapitta). It is a member of the roller family of birds and is also known as the blue jay or the Palapitta in Telugu.

The Indian Roller is a brightly colored bird, with a blue back, a rufous head and breast, and a white belly. It has a long and curved bill, and its wings are broad and rounded. The male and female have similar plumage.

The Indian Roller is considered a common bird in Telangana, it’s a sign of good luck and is often associated with prosperity and happiness in the local culture.

State Tree : Jammi Chettu (Prosopis Cineraria)

The state tree of Telangana is the Jammi Chettu (Prosopis cineraria). It is a species of small to medium-sized tree that is found in the arid regions of India. The tree is known for its hard wood, drought resistance and its ability to survive in dry and poor soil conditions.

The Jammi tree is also considered sacred in Hindu religion. It is believed that the tree has spiritual significance and is associated with the god of wealth and prosperity, Kubera. It is also said to bring good luck to the people who plant it. As per the mythology, Pandavas had vanquished a large army of Kauravas only after performing worshipping the Jammi Chettu. They had hidden their weapons on a Jammi Chettu when they had been forced into exile in the forests. Now, Telangana adopted the same to symbolize the same and get the blessings of the Jammi Chettu.

In Telangana, the tree is found in the arid regions of Nizamabad, Warangal, and Adilabad districts. The tree is also protected by the government, as it is considered an important part of the state’s ecosystem and culture.

State Fruit : Mango (Mangifera indica)

The state fruit of Telangana is the mango. The most popular varieties of mango found in Telangana are Alphonso, Banganapalli, Neelam, and Totapuri. Mangoes are known for their sweet taste and are a rich source of vitamins A and C, as well as antioxidants. They are commonly eaten fresh, but can also be used to make jams, jellies, and other preserves. The mango is an important crop for the state of Telangana and is widely cultivated in many areas, particularly in the districts of Warangal, Adilabad, and Nizamabad.

State Flower : Tangedu Puvvu (Tanner’s Cassia)

The state flower of Telangana is the Tangedu flower. It is a small, herbaceous perennial plant that belongs to the family Acanthaceae. The plant is known for its bright red or orange flowers that bloom from June to September. The Tangedu plant is commonly found in the rocky and hilly regions of Telangana and is also known for its medicinal properties. The plant is known to be used as a treatment for fever and other ailments in traditional medicine. The Tangedu flower is also used in Hindu religious ceremonies and is considered to be sacred by many people.Tangedu flower which is used during the Batukamma festival by women folk is the most appropriate choice as the state flower.

State Fish of Telangana – Murrel Fish (korameenu or korramatta)

The Telangana State government has declared ‘Murrel’ as the state fish. Murrel fish is widely known in Telugu as ‘Korramatta’ or ‘Korrameenu’ which is one of the largest producing species across the state. It has been added as seventh state icon identified by the government.

State Sport : Kabaddi

The state sport of Telangana is Kabaddi. Kabaddi is a contact sport, played between two teams of seven players each, with the objective of each team to send a “raider” into the opposing team’s side of the court, and capture as many of the opposing team’s players as possible, while the raider holds his breath and says “Kabaddi” repeatedly.

In Telangana, Kabaddi is also considered as a sport that is closely associated with the state’s culture and tradition. The sport is played in many village fairs, festivals and other cultural events, which showcases the sport’s popularity in the state.
