Jyothika obtained her diploma from The Learner’s Academy in Mumbai. She eventually enrolled at Mumbai’s Mithibai College, where she could concentrate on her psychology studies.

Jyothika was born to a Maharashtrian mother and a Punjabi father. Her parents are the actress Seema Sadanah and the film producer Chander Sadanah. She is half-sister to their renowned sister Nagma. She also has a sister named Roshini who was born Radhika and a brother named Suraj who works as an assistant director for Priyadarshan.
On September 11, 2006, Jyothika and Suriya were united in marriage. Poovellam Kettuppar, Uyirile Kalanthathu, Kaakha Kaakha, Perazhagan, Maayavi, June R, and Sillunu Oru Kaadhal are the seven movies in which they have starred together. Jyothika made her acting debut in the Priyadarshan-directed Bollywood film Doli Saja Ke Rakhna in 1997. Her first Tamil film (in a supporting part) was Vaali (1999), and her first Telugu film was Tagore (2003). She makes her acting debut in the lead Tamil role in Poovellam Kettuppar, a film in which Surya also co-stars. She took on a dual role for the first time while appearing in Perazhagan, for which she received two acting honors: the Dinakaran Best Actress Award and the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for Best Actress. In the movie Chandramukhi, she portrayed a woman who suffers from schizophrenia; for this role, she was given yet another Tamil Nadu State Film Award. She also received the Tamil Nadu State Film Award for the movie Mozhi.
Jyothika has endorsed several brands outside of the film business, such as Paragon shoes and Idhayam oil.
