“Dunky” is the third film released this year, starring Shah Rukh Khan, who once again showed his power in Bollywood after achieving a thousand crore success with the films “Pathan and Jawan”. Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, who achieved great heights as a director with films like “3 Idiots, Sanju”, there were huge expectations from the time of announcement. And could Shah Rukh & Rajkumar Hirani live up to those expectations? Let’s see whether it can stand up to “Salar”, which is going to attack the box office like a dinosaur.

Story: Hriday Singh alias Hardy (Shah Rukh Khan) comes from Pathan Kot to a village called Laltu in Punjab to meet the man who saved him.. by giving him his tape recorder. However.. knowing that the man is dead, he wants to help his younger sister Manu (Taapsi) to go to her dream of London.

No matter how many twists and turns the visa does not get, they finally want to reach London by stealth. “Dunky” movie is a collection of twists and pains they went through for that.

Acting Performance: Shah Rukh Khan carries the role of Hardy on his shoulders as always. However.. the emotion was not allowed to work anywhere in that role. Even though Vicky Kaushal did a great job in a small role, his role failed to create a big impact. Taapsee could not add any value to this movie as an actress. Her chemistry with Shah Rukh was also not good. Boman Irani and others did not get proper roles.

Technical Performance: “Dunky” will forever go down as the lowest-quality film in Shahrukh & Hirani’s careers. If you look at the graphics in some scenes, it feels like a 120 crore rupees movie. The cinematography work is also not at the Bollywood level. Even the background music does not live up to the emotional content. Pritam’s songs are good.

This is not a film of Rajkumar Hirani’s calibre as a director. His earlier films have been tear-jerking with hardened criminals. But… in “Dunky” there is not a single tear-jerking moment, which is a big minus. Also.. the story is another minus of the movie. The writers fail miserably to emotionally connect a very small point. The lack of Vidhu Vinod Chopra in this movie unit is obvious.

Analysis: If you go to the theatre with high expectations of the Shahrukh & Rajkumar Hirani combination, you will be disappointed. If not… Hirani Mark’s comedy & songs are quite good.. you can watch it once with patience. But.. it is difficult for this film to stand before “Salar”.

Rating: 1.5/5
