He then supported Sanjay Leela Bhansali in the film Black (2005) and made his acting debut in Bhansali’s tragic novel Saawariya (2007), a critical and commercial failure. Kapoor rose to fame for his performances in Wake Up Sid (2009), the romantic comedy Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009) and the drama Rocket Singh: Salesman of the Year (2009). The romantic drama film Rockstar (2011), in which he played a troubled musician, and the comedy-drama film Barfi! (2012), in which he was deaf and mute, earned Kapoor two consecutive Filmfare Best Actor Awards. Her lead role alongside Deepika Padukone in the romantic comedy Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), one of India’s highest-grossing films, established her as a leading actress in Bollywood. He then appeared in a series of films that performed poorly commercially, except the novel Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016).
