Sri Vijaya Puram is the capital city of Andaman and Nicobar Islands in India. Its old name is Port Blair. Sri Vijaya Puram is situated on the eastern coast of South Andaman Island, in the Bay of Bengal.
Sri Vijaya Puram Etymology
The word “Sri Vijaya Puram” Translates to the “City of Victory” in Sankrit and Telugu. This was renamed to mitigate the colonial legacy and to symbolise the victory achieved in our freedom struggle as stated by the union government.
Historically Sri Vijaya Puram served as the naval base for various kingdoms and also has significance during the freedom struggle.
It is also the place that hosted the first unfurling of our Tiranga by Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Ji and also the cellular jail in which Veer Savarkar Ji and other freedom fighters struggled for an independent nation.
