Lala Lajpat Rai was one of the greatest freedom fighters, he was also an author and politician, he was born on 28 January 1865 at Dhudike in the Faridkot district of the Punjab, he was born to Munshi Radha Krishna and Gulab Devi Aggarwal, his father was a teacher, he was also known as Punjab Kesari’ and ‘Lion of Punjab’. He was among the famous trio Lal Bal Pal who played a crucial role in the Indian Independence Movement. He was also a co-founder of Panjab National Bank and Lakshmi Insurance Company
Lala Lajpat Rai attended Government Higher Secondary School, Rewari and later went to Government College at Lahore to complete his LAW course, later his family moved to Hisar where he started practising LAW soon he became a founder member of the Bar Council of Hisar, during his practice he met many freedom fighters, Lala Hans Raj and Pandit Guru Dutt, he was influenced by Hindu reformist movement started by Swami Dayananda Saraswati and joined Arya Samaj, he helped to establish Dayananda Anglo-Vedic Schools of Mahatama Hansraj, he joined Indian National Congress and attended annual sessions along with Babu Churamani, Lala Chhabil Das and Seth Gauri Shankar.
Later Lala Lajpat Rai moved to Lahore and started practicing at Lahore High Court. In 1914 he quit law practice and thought to become a part of Indian Independence Movement He moved to Britain and later to the US and founded the Home Rule League of America, and he stayed there until 1920. In the same 1920 he was elected as President of the Indian National Congress in the Calcutta Special Session, he supported the non-cooperation movement of Gandhi at the Nagpur session of the Congress in 1920.
In the year 1921 he founded Servants of the People Society at Lahore which was a non profitable welfare organization, in the year 1926 he was elected as deputy leader of central legislative assembly, In the year 1928 a commission named Simon Commission was formed to study constitutional reform in British India, Sir John Simon headed it, all the Indian political parties boycotted this commission because it did not include any Indian members in it,
Rai led a non-violent protest against the commission when it visited Lahore on 30 October 1928 and gave a slogan Simon Go Back and carried black flag as a protest opposing Simon commission, James Scott imposed a lathi-charge in which Rai’s head was brutally injured and admitted to a hospital, but he couldn’t recover fully and died on 17 November 1928, as a revenge of his death Bhagat Singh took a swore to kill James Scott, Shivaram Rajguru, Sukhdev Thapar and Chandra Shekhar Azad later joined him in his plan, in this plot of killing scott they killed John P. Saunders by identity mistake.
Lala Lajpat Rai established a tuberculosis hospital for women in memory of his mother who died of tuberculosis, over time it was renamed Gulab Devi Memorial Hospital which became a famous hospital in present Pakistan.
In the year 1926 Rai R.K. Trust in memory of his father, in Meerut a college named after him as his memory as Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College, Government of India released a stamp on his name.
