Komaram Bheem a fighter for Adivasi rights and a freedom fighter born on 22 October 1901 at Sankepally Village of Asifabad Mandal in Telangana State, belongs to the Gondi tribal community which held little interaction from the outer world, they mainly live in forest regions and practice shifting cultivation or Jhum farming. He was married to Som Bai.
Komaram Bheem was born and brought up at forest area of Chanda and Ballalpur Kingdoms, after his father’s death he and his family moved to Sardarpur near Karimnagar, Gondi community over there started cultivating barren lands belongs to zamindar Laxman Rao, Rao imposed taxes for cultivating crops on his lands, he sent an official Siddiquesaab to collect the tax at the time of harvesting crops, an argument happened between them and Bheem killed him in anger and ran away to with his friend Kondal, a local printing press owner named Vitoba gave his shelter, at that time Bheem learned English, Hindi and Urdu languages, after Vitoba arrested by police he went to Assam and worked in a tea plantation. After that Bheem move to Bhabejhari and settled their by cultivating as piece of land, he was again asked to leave the land as it belongs to state, suffered with this threats he directly approached Nizam and tried explaining the Adivasi’s but they didn’t listen to him.
Komaram Bheem after the seeing the sufferings of the Adivasi and tribal people under the rule of Nizam imposing heavy taxes, forced labor, Bheem started to fight against the unlawful ruling of the Nizam, with the help of Communist Party of India he mobilized and stated a community and invited twelve districts to become a part of his revolution, they all decided to form a guerilla army to protect their lands and fight for their rights, his revolution got attracted many tribals and became part of them, after that they formed troops and started attacking landlords, government declared Bheem as leader of Gond Kingdom and started to negotiate with him offering to give back Gonds lands back to them, Bheem denied this offer and asked the forest official to leave the forest area and to release their men from jail but the government didn’t accept for his demands, this revolutionary movement passed for a decade his army gained up to 300 people, he gave a slogan Jal, Jangal, Zamin in the period of revolution, in 1940 Bheem was killed in an encounter by Abdul Sattar talukdar of Asifabadh with a troop of 90 policemen, he was traced by Kurdu Patel who was a part of Bheem’s army, the date of his encounter was in wrangle with October 1940 or April 1940 said by gondi tribes, this rebellion continued after his death and merged with Telangana Rebellion. In his memory a statue was installed at Tank Bund Road, Hyderabad and named a dam after his name as Sri Komaram Bheem Project, a museum was built in his memory at Jodeghat, in the year 2016 Adilabad district was reamed as Komaram Bheem district.
