Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated 21.8km Atal Bihari Vajpayee Smruti Sewri-Nhava Sheva Atal Setu, also known as the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link (MTHL), on Friday.

1. Mumbai Trans Harbour link (MTHL), later named ‘Atal Bihari Vajpayee Sewri – Nhava Sheva Atal Setu’ has been built to provide faster connectivity between Mumbai International airports and sea ports. This was inaugurated on 12th January 2024 by Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi.

2. Mumbai Trans Harbour link is the world’s longest bridge and also the sea bridge in India and the world’s 12th longest sea bridge

3. It is about 21.8 km long 6-lane bridge having about 16.5 km of its length over the sea and about 5.5 km on the land.

4. The foundation stone of the bridge was in December, 2016 by PM Narendra Modi and was completed by 2023. The same is dedicated to the nation on 12th January 2024.

5. In short this is called ‘Atal Setu’. This has been constructed at a total cost of more than Rs 17,840 crore.

6. It will provide faster connectivity to Mumbai International Airport and Navi Mumbai International Airport and will also reduce the travel time from Mumbai to Pune, Goa and South India. It will also improve connectivity between Mumbai Port & Jawaharlal Nehru Port.

7. Mumbai Trans Harbour Link between Sewri in Mumbai and Nhava Sheva in Raigad district to bring down Mumbai To Navi Mumbai travel time to just 20 Minutes. MTHL will feature interchanges at Sewri in Mumbai and Shivaji Nagar, Jassi, and Chirle on National Highway 4B in Navi Mumbai.

8. The 21.8 km sea bridge will be open to commuters from January 13.

9. The Atal Setu is India’s first sea bridge to implement an open road tolling system, which will allow vehicles to pass through toll booths at speeds of up to 100 kilometres per hour without having to stop.

10. Atal setu bridge is built to withstand four different types of earthquakes of up to 6.5 magnitude.
