A diamond of 2,492 carats was unearthed in the Karowe diamond mine in Botswana.The same was announced by Lucara Diamond Corporation in a statement on 22nd August 2024. It stated that this is the second largest diamond in the world.
It was identified based on the X-ray detection technology installed in the Karoway mine. The largest diamond in the world is of 3,106 carat Callinal diamond, unearthed in South Africa in 1905. However this latest excavated diamond has become the second largest, according to the statement.
Yet the company did not disclose the value and quality of this diamond. Lucara Corporation President William Lamb said: ‘We are very pleased to have discovered this extraordinary 2,492 carat diamond’.
Botswana, a country in southern Africa is popular for diamond mining and is one of the world’s largest diamond producing countries globally.
