Balraj Panwar (born 2000) is an outstanding Indian rower from Kaimla village in Haryana. He showcases his unique talent in the men’s single sculls event. Balraj Panwar was born in Kaimla village in Karnal district of Haryana. Life brought him hardships very early; his father Randhir passed away when he was just 10 years old. Thereafter, his mother Kamla raised Balraj and his four siblings by doing odd jobs like picking vegetables, selling milk, working at construction sites and harvesting wheat. To improve the family’s financial condition, she also worked in a textile factory. Since October 2021, Balraj has been preparing for the Olympics at the Army Training Node in Pune, where he is training under the guidance of national coach Ismail Beg and 2008 Olympian Bajrang Lal Takhar. Balraj Panwar created history by winning a bronze medal at the Asia-Oceania Olympic Qualification Rowing Competition in Chungju, South Korea on 21 April 2024. This win earned him India’s first Olympic quota in rowing for the 2024 Paris Olympics. 

Balraj Panwar maintained the lead for the first 1600 metres of the 2 km race, but despite a slight drop in the last 500 metres, his early lead helped him qualify for the Olympics. Earlier, in the 2022 Asian Games, he reached the final but missed the bronze medal. As a second reserve, he participated in the Asian Games at the last minute and also participated in the World Championship in Switzerland before the Asian Games in July 2023. Balraj Panwar’s rowing journey began with the Army, where he was selected for rowing due to his 6-foot height. In his first attempt itself, he proved his ability by winning the battalion regatta. He further honed his skills by participating in the 2022 National Games and the 2023 National Championship.
