Subrahmanyam Jaishankar is India’s External Affairs Minister. He is a Member of the Upper House (Rajya Sabha) of India’s Parliament from the state of Gujarat. He has been chosen for this ministry for the second consecutive term in 2024 under Modi 3.0 cabinet.
He was Foreign Secretary from 2015-18, Ambassador to the United States (2013-15), China (2009-2013) and the Czech Republic (2000-2004). He was High Commissioner to Singapore (2007-2009).
He has also served in other diplomatic assignments in Embassies in Moscow, Colombo, Budapest and Tokyo, as well as in the Ministry of External Affairs and the President’s Secretariat. He was also President of global Corporate Affairs at Tata Sons Private Limited from May 2018.
Dr S. Jaishankar is a graduate of St. Stephen’s College at the University of Delhi. He has a Master in Political Science and an M. Phil and a Ph.D in International Relations from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi.
He is a recipient of the Padma Shri award in 2019 and has written widely acclaimed best-selling books: The India Way: Strategies for an Uncertain World, which was published in 2020 and Why Bharat Matters, which was published in 2024.

Early Life and Education:
S. Jaishankar belongs to the family of diplomats and scholars. His father, K. Subrahmanyam was a renowned strategic analyst and his mother Sulochana is a social activist. By growing up in this environment, S. Jaishankar is involved in deep study, knowledge and public service. His academic journey began at St. Stephen’s College FDelhi. he completed his bachelor’s degree in Chemistry, and then he did his master’s in MA. To continue his academics, he is pursuing the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), for their M.Phil and PhD in International Relations and Nuclear Diplomacy. Being a student at St. Stephen’s College and JNU, he demonstrated leadership qualities and served in various student organisations and academic committees. Diplomatic Career & Achievements:
S. Jaishankar’s diplomatic career began in 1977 when he joined the Indian Foreign Service(IFS). Over the serving period, he held various positions in Indian missions abroad like Moscow, Tokyo and Washington D.C. His diplomatic skills and understanding of international relations make him known as a rising star in Indian Diplomacy. From 2014 to 2019, he was India’s Ambassador to the United States where he played an important role in bonding the India-US ties and shared many strategies. As said, S. Jaishamkar belongs to an ideal family. Jaishankar is married to Kyoko Jaishankar, a Japanese woman. He met her in Japan during his diplomatic posting. Kyoto is his second wife. He married Koyoto after his first wife died due to cancer. He has two sons from Kyoto, named Dhruva and Arjun. They follow their father’s footsteps and pursue their life in their respective fields. Despite his hectic career and work life, he maintained a close-knit family life. He values their family and spends quality time with them.
