Smriti Irani is an actress-turned-politician, who is a Member of Lok Sabha from Amethi Constituency in the 17th Lok Sabha (2019-2024). Smriti Irani was born as ‘Smriti Malhotra’ on Tuesday, 23 March 1976 (age 47 years; as of 2023) in New Delhi. Her zodiac sign is Aries. She did her schooling at Holy Child Auxilium School in New Delhi. She is a 12th pass. She enrolled for B.Com in the School of Open Learning, Delhi University but left the course in between.

Smriti Irani Birth

Born on 23rd March 1976 to a Punjabi family, Irani is 47 years old as on 2023. Her name is Smriti Malhotra. Her father Mr Ajay Kumar Malhotra is a Punjabi and mother Mrs Shibani Bagchi is Bengali. Smriti Irani is eldest among three sisters.

Irani is wife of Zubin Faredoon Irani aka Zubin Irani. Smriti Irani came to Mumbai from Delhi to pursue her dreams. She faced the most difficult time of her life there. She had a friend named Mona in Mumbai. Mona and Smriti were childhood friends and they went through modelling struggles together. When Smriti came to Mumbai, Mona was already married to rich business tycoon Zubin Irani. Since Smriti Irani had no place to stay in Mumbai, Mona helped her. Smriti spends her starting time at Mona and Zubin’s residence. This was the time, Zubin and Smrit developed a relationship. If rumours are to be believed, Mona wanted to discontinue her marriage and she divorced Zubin. Since Zubin and Mona had a daughter, Zubin approached Smriti Irani for marriage and to raise their daughter.

On the other hand, sources say Zubin developed a relationship with Smriti Irani when she was staying at their residence. And Zubin’s relationship with Smriti caused  Zubin and  Mona to divorce. Whatever may be, it’s history now. Zubin Smriti and Mona, all are happy now in their zones.

Smriti Irani came to Mumbai in 1990. In Mumbai, Smriti Irani participated in the 1998 Femina Miss India contest. She could not win the title but she could make her place in top finalists. Smriti Irani also performed in a song with famous Punjabi singer Mika Singh. As a TV actor, she got fame in ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi‘ TV-serial which Ekta Kapoor has directed. The serial aired from 3rd Jul 2000 to 6th Nov 2008. Smriti played Tulsi in the serial.

 Apart from ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi‘, Smriti has showcased her acting skills in serials ‘Kya Hadsa Kya Haqiqat‘. She has also worked in Bengali, Hindi and Telugu films.

Smriti has won 9 awards for the serial ‘Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi’. She also won Best Actress award in 2010 for serial ‘Virudh’.

Political career of Smriti Irani

Smriti Irani stepped into politics in 2003 itself when she was working for TV also. She chose RSS to join. Her grandfather was also member of RSS, that may be reason of her joining RSS. Irani was selected as Deputy head of ‘Maharashtra Yuva Wing’ in 2004. She came into lime light when she was BJP candidate from Amethi in 2014 Lok Sabha elections opposite Rahul Gandhi. Though she lost her seat but BJP awarded her with a post in Central Cabinet.

She Opposed Narendra Modi

In 2004, Narendra Modi was blamed for alleged involvement in Gujarat Riots. Smriti opposed him and headed campaign demanding resignation of Narendra Modi from CM post. She also underwent ‘Fast Until Death campaigned for Modi’s resignation as chief minister. However,  was  by party condemned her Act and she was forced to step down.

Smriti Irani degree controversy

Her bachelor degree has brought bad time for her. In 2004 Lok Sabha nominations, she declared her degree BA from Delhi University whereas in 2014 elections she declared her B Com Degree. The qualification difference in two nominations has faced her lot of problems. She also had to face court in degree controversy. Degree controversy also cost her post of Ministry of HRD.

Controversy on selection of NIT Chairman.

 When Smriti Irani was HRD minister, She selected Mr Vishram Jamadar as Head of NIT Nagpur. Smriti Irani was alleged to select Mr Vishram because he was in connection with RSS.     

 German Language Controversy

This controversy also caught fire when Smriti Irani was holding HRD Ministry. In 2014, She ordered Kendriya Vidyalaya’s to discontinue German language from syllabus and add Sanskrit instead. Later German chancellor Angela Markel discussed this matter with Mr Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
