Nara Chandrababu Naidu, popularly known as CBN, is a prominent Indian politician and the current Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh State. With a political career spanning decades, Naidu served as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh from 1995 to 2004 and held the position of Opposition Leader from 2004 to 2014. N Chandrababu Naidu also serves as the National President of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP). Naidu who faced a significant setback in the 2019 Andhra Pradesh Legislative Assembly Elections, has bounced back with a thumping Majority in 2024 Elections where his party alone got 135 of 175 seats and his alliance secured 164/175 seats leaving no opposition status to the Jagan Mohan led YSRCP.

Nara Chandrababu Naidu is the former Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh and the National President of the Telugu Desam Party. His political career began as a student leader in Chandragiri near Tirupati. After the Emergency, he joined the Congress Party in 1978. In 1980, he married NTR’s daughter. NTR is a famous actor and founder of TDP. After his defeat by the TDP candidate in the 1983 elections, he left the Congress and joined the Telugu Desam Party.

In 1995, he rebelled against his uncle NTR and was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh. From then till 2004 he continued as the Chief Minister of AP. However, he could not retain power in the subsequent elections. In the 2014 assembly elections, it allied with the BJP and won 102 seats out of a total of 175 seats. He created history by serving as the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh for the longest time. He also holds the record of serving as the leader of the opposition for a long time. In 2024 his party again got landslide victory and a big mandate from the people of Andhra Pradesh. He is currently serving as chief minister of Andhra Pradesh for the fourth term.

Interesting facts about Nara Chandrababu Naidu

At the age of 28, he became the youngest MLA and minister in the state. In 1999, the TDP party led by him won 185 seats out of 294 seats in the state assembly and 29 seats out of 42 Lok Sabha seats, becoming the second-largest party in the NDA alliance. He escaped safely from a landmine attack in 2003. In that attack, his neck bones and head were injured. To go to school in his childhood, he used to walk 11 kilometres every day till the ninth standard. In 1992, he founded Heritage. The company is currently one of the largest private dairies in South India.

2019

In the 2019 assembly and parliamentary elections, the ruling TDP was decisively defeated by the YSR Congress Party led by Y. S. Jagan Mohan Reddy. The YSRCP achieved a landslide victory by securing 151 seats in the assembly out of 175, while the TDP could manage 23 seats. In the Lok Sabha, the TDP won three seats, while the YSRCP secured the remaining 22 seats. Naidu is currently preparing for the upcoming elections in 2024, possibly in alliance with Pawan Kalyan’s Jana Sena party. There has been speculation suggesting that Naidu is also attempting to regain the confidence of the BJP.

2014

  • He became the Chief Minister of the divided AP after the separation of Telangana from Andhra Pradesh. On June 8, 2014, he was sworn in as the Chief Minister of the newly formed state of Andhra Pradesh.

2009

  • He was elected MLA again after winning against Congress candidate M. Subramaniam Reddy from Kuppam.

2004

  • Although Chandrababu won again from Kuppam, he resigned from the post of Chief Minister after the defeat of the TDP in the 2004 assembly elections. Later he was elected as the Leader of Opposition in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly and continued in that position for a long time.

1999

  • Chandrababu Naidu once again contested from Kuppam in the assembly elections. In that election, he won against Congress candidate M. Subramania Reddy by a margin of 65,687 votes. He continued as the chief minister of the state.

  • Naidu who once again contested from Kuppam, Congress candidate B.R. Doraswamy won with a majority of 6918 votes. Later he worked as TDP party coordinator from 1989 to 1994.

1985

  • Despite playing a key role in the TDP, he did not contest the assembly elections.

1984

  • After Naidu was appointed as TDP General Secretary, he played a key role in the party. He foiled the conspiracy of the Congress party to remove NTR from the post of Chief Minister. Although this won NTR’s trust, he could not hold any ministerial post between 1984-89.

1983

  • He lost to TDP candidate Venkatrama Naidu Medasani from Chandragiri constituency by a margin of 19 thousand votes. Later he joined Naidu TDP.
