Jagat Prakash Nadda also called JP Nadda is an Indian Politician and current Minister of Health, Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers since 2024 and 11th President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) since 2020. He is an MP of the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat state since 2024. He belongs to Himachal Pradesh. Born to father Dr. Narain Lal Nadda and mother Late Shrimati Krishna Nadda on 2nd December 1960, he was married to Dr Mallika Nadda, a professor of History at the Himachal Pradesh University on 11 December 1991. He has risen through the ranks in the ABVP, of which he was a part during his student days in Himachal Pradesh and Bihar.

Early Life
He was born on 2nd December, 1960 in a Brahmin family to Dr. Narain Lall Nadda and Shrimati Krishna Nadda. He was educated at St. Xaviers School, Patna. Thereafter, he did his B.A. from Patna College, Patna University and LL.B. from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla. As a child, he represented Bihar State in the All India Junior Swimming Championship held at Delhi. On 11 December 1991, he married Dr. Mallika Nadda and now the couple have two sons. His mother-in-law is former Lok Sabha Member of Parliament, Smt. Jayshree Banerjee.
He entered politics in the year 1975 when he joined the then ongoing Sampurna Kranti movement started by Jaya prakash Narayan during the black days of emergency. He joined ABVP while studying in Patna University and entered student activism. He was elected as Secretary, Patna University Students’ Union in 1977 as ABVP candidate.
After graduating from the Patna University, he completed his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B) degree from the Himachal University. In 1987, he had to face a 45-day detention for organising an anti-government campaign against the ruling Congress Party by forming a Rashtriya Sangharsh Morcha. During the Lok Sabha Polls held in the year 1989, he was assigned a major responsibility as election in-charge of the BJP’s youth wing when he was just 29 years old.
Moving ahead, just three years later in 1991, he was made National President of Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha at the young age of 31 years. Later, he fought Assembly elections from his home state Himachal Pradesh and won three times.
He has been a Cabinet Minister in the Himachal Pradesh. He also shouldered the responsibilities of BJP National General Secretary and Member Secretary of BJP Parliamentary Board. He held the position of Union Health minister in the first Modi government.
Political Career
- In 1993-1998,1998 – 2003 and 2007 – 2012 served for three terms as a Member of the Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
- In 1994 – 1998 as a Leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party Legislative group, Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly.
- From 1998 to 2003 as a Cabinet Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Parliamentary Affairs, Government of Himachal Pradesh.
- In 2008 – 2010 as a Cabinet Minister of Forest, Environment, Science and Technology, Government of Himachal Pradesh.
- In April 2012 Elected to Rajya Sabha.
- From May 2012 onwards as a Member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Transport, Tourism and Culture
- From August 2012 onwards as a Member of the Court of the University of Delhi Member and the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Health and Family Welfare
- From May 2013 onwards as a Member of Parliamentary Standing Committee on Privileges.
- He was elected to the Rajya Sabha in 2014.
- Became Union Health Minister from 2014 to 2019.
- Appointed as a National Working President of Bhartiya Janata Party in 2019.
- He was elected as a BJP National President in 2020.
- 2024 – till date : Currently serving as Union minister of Health, Minister of Chemicals and Fertilizers since 2024 under Modi 3.0 Cabinet.
