M. Kodandaram Biography: Muddasani Kodandaram, affectionately known as Prof. Kodandaram, is a multi-faceted figure in Indian politics, best known for spearheading the movement for a separate Telangana state. A retired professor of political science, he rose to prominence as the convener of the Telangana Joint Action Committee, leading protests and negotiations that ultimately culminated in Telangana’s creation in 2014. Now a politician himself, he founded the Telangana Jana Samithi party and remains a vocal advocate for the state’s development and rights.
Born on September 5, 1955, in Nennel village, Adilabad district, Telangana.
Completed his education in Warangal and Hyderabad, obtaining an M.A., M.Phil., and Ph.D. in Political Science from Osmania University.
Briefly worked as a civil liberties activist before joining Osmania University as a lecturer in Political Science in 1980.
Telangana Movement:
Emerged as a prominent figure in the Telangana movement during the 1990s, advocating for the region’s separate statehood due to perceived neglect and discrimination.
Played a key role in organizing seminars, protests, and hunger strikes to raise awareness about the Telangana issue.
Founded the Telangana Vidya Vanthula Vedika (Telangana Intellectuals Forum) in 2004 and served as its president.
Became the convener of the Telangana Joint Action Committee (T-JAC) in 2009, leading a united front of various political parties and organizations demanding Telangana’s separation.
His relentless efforts and strategic leadership proved instrumental in achieving Telangana statehood in 2014.
Political Career:
Following the formation of Telangana, Kodandaram distanced himself from the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) party and expressed concerns over unfulfilled promises.
Founded the Telangana Jana Samithi (TJS) party in 2018 to provide a platform for alternative voices and advocate for the rights and development of the Telangana people.
Currently serves as the President of TJS and remains a vocal critic of the TRS government, raising issues like farmer distress, unemployment, and corruption.
