Atishi Marlena Singh Early Life and Education
Born on June 8, 1981, Atishi comes from a scholarly family in Delhi. Her parents, Vijay Singh and Tripta Wahi, are both professors at Delhi University.
Known as Atishi, she was given the middle name โMarlena,โ which is a combination of Marx and Lenin, reflecting her ideological beliefs. In 2018, she decided to use the name Atishi in her public life to shift the focus from her family background to her professional work.
Her educational journey started in Delhi, where she completed her high school education at Springdales School, Pusa Road. Atishi pursued her undergraduate degree in History at the esteemed St. Stephen’s College in 2001.
She continued her studies at Oxford University, where she earned a masterโs degree in History in 2003 on a Chevening scholarship. Following this, she was a Rhodes scholar at Magdalen College in 2005.

In January 2013, Atishi entered politics by joining the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). She played a key role in shaping policies, drawing from her involvement in the Anti-Corruption Movement in India. Her activism gained attention during the Jal Satyagraha in Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh, in 2015, where she supported AAP leader Alok Agarwal during the protests and subsequent legal battles.
Before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Atishi was given the responsibility of overseeing East Delhi for the party. She contested the elections but suffered a significant loss, securing the third position against BJP’s Gautam Gambhir, with a margin of defeat of 4.77 lakh votes.
In her political career, the 2020 Delhi Legislative Assembly elections were a significant turning point for Atishi. She won the Kalkaji constituency in South Delhi, defeating BJP candidate Dharambir Singh by a margin of 11,422 votes. This victory elevated her to a prominent position in the Delhi government.
