Rahul Tewatia Profile
Rahul Tewatia is a lower-order batter for Gujarat Titans (GT) who has a reputation for pulling off the impossible in the IPL
In IPL 2022, with Titans needing 12 off 2 balls against Punjab Kings, Tewatia struck two sixes to enhance his reputation as a finisher. He won the IPL title with the Titans that season.
Before playing for Titans, Tewatia had been part of three IPL teams – Rajasthan Royals, Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals
It was during his second stint with Royals in 2020 that Tewatia shot to prominence when he went from 9 off 18 balls to hitting five sixes in the final over to help chase down 224
Tewatia also bowls part-time leg spin and has 32 wickets in the IPL, though he hasn’t been used much since the Impact Player rule was introduced in 2023.
Stocky 29-year-old allrounder Rahul Tewatia burst into the IPL’s consciousness in 2020, when, promoted to No. 4 by Rajasthan Royals in a chase of 224 against Kings XI Punjab, he crawled to 8 off 19 balls before turning into Mr Hyde and smacking five sixes off an over, taking his side to an unlikely win. A few games on, he produced an only slightly less impressive encore, lashing 45 from No. 7 in a chase of 159.
That year was Tewatia’s annus mirabilis. Nine of the 17 first-class wickets he had taken with his serviceable leg spin in a sparse seven-game career for Haryana up until then came in a single match, against Jammu & Kashmir in February 2020.
Two seasons on, he played a major hand for his new IPL side, Gujarat Titans, with three 40s that each took them to wins in their first year, where they finished as title-holders.
IPL through the years
Rahul Tewatia is a wrist spinner and an extremely handy lower-order batsman, he is capable of playing the paddles and the scoops. And Tewatia as a package is a valuable addition to any IPL side. That was the reason he was one of the surprise packages of the 2018 Indian Premier League auctions. The base price of the 24- year old-leg-spinner was just Rs 10 Lakhs. But within minutes the price soared to a massive 2.5 Crores.
His previous team Kings11 Punjab were after him but eventually, Delhi Daredevils bought him at 3 Crores. In the last edition, he was picked ahead of the veteran Amit Mishra by the Delhi franchise. Initially, the move seemed justified but soon his performance dipped and Mishra was replaced. In this season, Delhi has three wrist spinners in their team and it will be fascinating to see which one will figure in the playing eleven.
