Ishan Kishan Profile
Ishan Kishan is an Indian wicketkeeper-batter who was born on July 18, 1998, in Patna Bihar. Kishan is a left-handed batter and a utility right-arm leg-break bowler as well. In December 2014, Kishan made his first-class debut for Jharkhand. Kishan initially got the selectors’ attention in 2014 when he played in his first Ranji season, recording a hundred and five fifties.
During a Ranji Trophy match against Delhi in November 2016, Kishan made 273 runs, setting a record for the most runs by a Jharkhand player in the competition. The young man gained attention before that when he was chosen to captain the India U19 side at the 2016 ICC U19 World Cup in Bangladesh.
Despite having a poor batting performance (73 runs in six innings), he led India to the finals and eventually finished as the runner-up to West Indies. But Ishan’s captaincy in the ICC U19 WC didn’t go unnoticed. His consistency in the domestic circuit and IPL opened doors for the Indian team as he was selected for the ODI and T20I squads for the Sri Lanka tour in June 2021. In 2022, he slammed a double century against Bangladesh in a dead rubber, becoming the fourth Indian to achieve the feat.
A wicketkeeper and left-handed opening batsman from Jharkhand, the same state MS Dhoni hails from, Ishan Kishan led India at the Under-19 World Cup in 2016 in Bangladesh, where his team finished runners-up to West Indies.
Even though India had a successful tournament, Kishan struggled for form on seamer-friendly tracks, scoring just 73 runs in six innings.
He was first noticed when he struck a 69-ball 87, studded with eight sixes, on a rank Rajkot turner in a Ranji Trophy clash against Saurashtra in October 2015. He then led India Under-19s to a one-day tri-series win in Sri Lanka, also involving the hosts and England, two months later. He made his first-class debut for Jharkhand in December 2014 and scored a century and five fifties in his first ten first-class matches.
His attacking approach to batting had him picked by Gujarat Lions in the 2016 IPL auction for INR 35 lakh ($US 52,000 approx) at the age of 17.
IPL through the years
A young wicketkeeper-batsman from Jharkhand who has made his name through a brand of attacking cricket (ring a bell?), Ishan Kishan has gained tremendously from the platform that the IPL has provided. He impressed with his lower-order hitting for the Gujarat Lions in 2017 and was at the receiving end of a windfall in the 2018 IPL auctions, where the Mumbai Indians won a bidding war and bagged his services for INR 6.2 crores.
After a promising start to the 2018 season, his form nosedived through the middle of the tournament, but the flashes of brilliance were still there, like his whirlwind 21-ball 62 against the Kolkata Knight Riders, which included four consecutive sixes off Kuldeep Yadav. His consistency may not have been the greatest, but he was able to finish the season with a superb strike-rate of close to 150.
