Devon Conway Profile

An attacking left-handed batsman who relishes batting at the top in limited-overs cricket, Conway is also an efficient wicketkeeper. Born and brought up in South Africa, Conway made a shift to New Zealand in 2017. With close to 100 First-class games and 70 List A games to his credit, Conway was already an established name in South Africa’s domestic circuit and it didn’t take long for the Southpaw to impress the New Zealand selectors. One of his biggest strengths is his adaptability across formats.

On arriving in New Zealand, Conway joined the University Club and gradually started plying his trade in the Super Smash for the Wellington Firebirds. He was mostly a standby in the initial days with the odd game in between but first-choice keeper Tom Blundell’s national call-up allowed Conway more game time, thereby pushing his case further. Thereafter, he represented Wellington in all three formats of New Zealand’s domestic season and enjoyed reasonable success while at it.

Conway made his debut for New Zealand after being eligible to play for the country in August 2020. His first international debut came in the shortest format (T20Is) and soon he became a regular across formats for the Kiwi nation. On his Test debut at Lord’s, Conway made a superb 200 as he announced his arrival on the grandest stage in style. Currently, Conway is an indispensable part of the New Zealand side and is one of their best batters.

Conway’s exploits for New Zealand drew worldwide attention when he was picked by CSK in the 2022 mega auction for INR 1 Crore. Having played a considerable amount of league cricket across the globe, Conway continues to remain a key member of the national side. Consistency and composure are Conway’s best allies, and his average in all three formats (as of October 2023) stands as a thumping testimony to all the hard work he put in during the initial stages of his playing career.
