It is dedicated to the goddess Mahankali and is a thanksgiving offering for the mother goddess in the form of Bonalu along with Sarees and Vodi Biyyam (Rice) etc

The origin of Bonalu dates back to the 19th century, during the reign of the Qutb Shahi dynasty. According to legend, a major plague outbreak struck the city, and the people prayed to the goddess Mahakali for relief. The plague subsided, and the people attributed their deliverance to the goddess’s intervention. Since then, Bonalu has been celebrated annually to express gratitude and seek the goddess’s continued protection.

The festival is celebrated over several days, typically in July or August, and involves various rituals, processions, and offerings to the goddess. Devotees offer sacrifices, usually in the form of animals (such as goats or chickens), and perform dances like the “Pothuraju” dance, which is a traditional folk dance. The festival is also marked by colorful processions, music, and traditional food.

Bonalu is an important part of Telangana’s cultural heritage and is celebrated with great fervor and devotion.

Bonalu 2024 Date and complete Schedule

Bonalu festival starts with Golconda Bonalu with the first Bangaru Bonam(gold bonam) to the goddess Golconda Jagadamba Mahankali and ends with offering Golden Bonam to Lal Darwaza Simhavahini Ammavaru.

Below is the complete schedule of Bonalu 2024:

Devotees visit the temple to offer bonalu especially the crowd is high on Sunday where most of the devotees offer their bonam in the ashada masam to the mother goddess.

Sapta Bangaru Bonalu to Sapta Matruka – Seven Golden Bonam will be offered to seven Goddesses on various dates as below.

Bangaru Bonam 2024 SCHEDULE AND DATES

7th July 2024 : Golconda Bonalu – First Gold Bonam offered to Goddess Jagadamba

10th July 2024 : Balkampet Yellamma Bonalu to goddess Ellamma

12th July 2024 : Jublee Hills Peddamna Talli Bonalu

14th July 2024 : Bangaru Bonam to Vijayawada Kanaka Durgamma

18th July 2024 : Secunderabad Ujjaini Mahankali Ammavari Bonalu

23th July 2024: Charminar Bhagyalakshmi Ammavari Bonalu

25th July 2024 : Lal Darwaza Simhavahini Ammavaru

Minister Konda Surekha offering Bangaru Bonam to Goddess Jagadamba of Golconda

Bonam

Bonalu is the state festival of Telangana state in India.
